Preparing For Ceramics Classes
Are you planning on taking ceramics classes? You must be looking forward to it. Anyone interested can avail of some sort of formal training anywhere from universities to art centers nowadays. Fees are not that expensive either but what you need to prepare for are the materials and supplies you will need. Before your classes start, try to get hold of information as to which materials are included in the costs and if possible, obtain a list of things you need to purchase.
Commonly, you will required to bring your own sponge, wire used for cutting finished forms, a thin half-moon tool for shaping, a pointed tool, and a sketchpad for taking notes and planning your designs. More likely than not, you would be the one to buy your own supply of clay. Go to your local art store to find out if it sells the textbook you need. If you’re lucky, there might be some pre-made packets of discounted supplies. You may also save up by contacting former students and buying off materials they no longer need.
During your ceramics classes, it would be better if you wear comfortable and casual clothes you would not mind getting dirty. Expect your classes to be messy as you will need to perform tasks such as tossing a ball of wet clay into the spinning wheel or constantly dipping your hands in water. You may wear an apron to minimize the mess. Also, it would be a good idea to wear clothes with lots of pockets for your tools.
Always be attentive and write down instructions. Pay close attention to discussions about safety procedures and handling. The kiln especially is exposed to high temperatures so extra care must be taken. You also need to learn how to properly load and handle it. But of course, you must enjoy every minute of your classes and let your creativity shine through!
