Use A Ceramic Rod To Sharpen Your Knives

Knives are highly important, especially in the kitchen. They need to be regularly honed however before being used. Over time, if used often to perform various tasks, even the sharpest knife will eventually lose it sharp edge. Using a ceramic rod to sharpen knives has always been a good way to keep knives in pristine condition for a longer period of time. A rod made of ceramic straightens a knife’s edge back out. Because it is made of harder steel, it gets rid of weakened steel in a knife so the edge is realigned. Here’s how to use rod properly in sharpening knives:

  1. Take the ceramic rod and hold it vertically. Rest the rod’s tip on any non-slip surface. You can use a towel for this. Take the knife and place the heel of the blade against the rod. Position it in an angle you used when you sharpen the knife. If you are unsure, a 15-degree angle is a good estimate. Remember that you need to use the same angle until you are done with the honing process.
  2. Start stroking the knife against the rod using downward motions. Start at the heel of the blade and finish at the tip each time. Your wrist must stay still and your elbow must not be in the way. Apply small amount of pressure against the rod.
  3. When you are satisfied, start with the other side of the knife. Again, stroke in the same way you did with the other side. Stroke alternatively from side to side. About four to five strokes will do.
  4. When you are satisfied that your knife has been honed enough, wipe it off to get rid of steel bits from the blade. You may start using it again. Just repeat the same process for your other knives.
