Making Homemade Ceramic Kilns
Ceramic kilns are where ceramics are taken to be fired. You can actually try to make your own kiln at home so you can have your ceramics fired anytime you like. It also saves you some money as compared to buying a commercial kiln. If you have some tools, just follow the instructions in this article to build your own homemade kiln.
You first have to decide what kind of kiln you want. Get a piece of paper and do a sketch of the shape, sign, and design you prefer. Gather tools you might need like firebricks, saws, drills, and sheet metal – all of which are available in your local hardware store. You would also need goggles so make sure you have it ready. Put all the things you need in one place so you carry out the project smoothly.
When you are ready to start, put on a face mask and your goggles. Cut angles into your firebricks. This will be your corner pieces. Have extra bricks ready in case you make a mistake. Start cutting the metal as well. On a smooth surface, start working from the bottom of the kiln upwards. Join the pieces together with the aid of a high heat mortar. Ceramic kilns should be able to withstand heat pressure so take extra care in piecing everything together. Allow the kiln to dry for around twenty four hours.
Start drilling holes where heat will enter when the bricks are finally dry. Work on the wiring for the control box. Ready the piece of metal where you will permanently set up your homemade kiln. When ready, attach the control box to one side of the kiln and then test the coils by plugging. Make sure that it heats properly. Do a test-run on the kiln by firing it up fully and placing a piece of ceramic. Make necessary adjustments if needed.
